Humane Pennsylvania and its partners can only do the work we do for animals with the help of over 600 volunteers who donate their time, expertise, and love every single day. We welcome volunteers to help us make Pennsylvania the most humane state in the nation!

Whether it’s animal care or dog walking, event support, clerical, fundraising, weeding, adoption promotion, or any other of the many volunteer opportunities we have to offer, every volunteer job is part of our success.

Humane Pennsylvania values our volunteers, members, and supporters as important contributors to the work we do and it is thanks to the generously donated time and assistance of volunteers that we can offer many high quality programs and services to Berks, Lancaster and surrounding Counties pets and residents! We have a variety of volunteer opportunities at the shelter, in the community, and from home! Everyone plays an important role in making sure all animals have a loving, safe home to call their own – thank you for becoming involved!

The first step to volunteer is to fill out the HPA Volunteer Application. Your application will then be electronically submitted to our Volunteer Coordinator. Once your completed application has been received and reviewed, you will be contacted via email with information on attending an upcoming volunteer orientation at either the Humane League of Lancaster County or the Humane Society of Berks County.

Please note that the minimum age for volunteering at our shelter is 14. Those between the age of 14-17 will be required to volunteer with a parent or legal guardian. Each individual will need to submit a volunteer application and attend an orientation before volunteering.

For those under the age of 14 or who are unable to donate their time to volunteering directly with our organization, we have a list of Service Projects that can be completed at home or in our community and still provide a great benefit to our organization and shelter animals.

If you have questions or need additional information about volunteering for Humane Pennsylvania, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator at
