Gem and Jewel are a bonded pair of young female rats who are still learning that the world—and people—can be safe. They’ve been at the shelter for the past two months, quietly waiting for someone patient enough to help them come out of their shells.

These girls are more fearful than most, and when they feel overwhelmed or unsure, they may react defensively. Because of this, they’ve been passed over time and time again. But their behavior comes from fear, not aggression—they simply haven’t had the consistent, gentle socialization they need to feel secure.

Underneath that fear are two sensitive, intelligent little animals who have so much potential to bond with the right person. Rats are incredibly social and form deep connections, but for Gem and Jewel, that trust will take time, patience, and understanding to build.

They’re looking for a calm, quiet, adult home with someone experienced—or dedicated to learning—who will respect their pace and give them the space they need to feel safe. Small steps, consistent care, and kindness will go a long way with these two.

Gem and Jewel may not be instant companions, but for someone willing to invest in them, the reward of earning their trust will be something truly special.

If you believe in giving shy animals the chance they deserve, Gem and Jewel are waiting for you.
